Bing Crosby once played in a golf tournament here for the American War Dads. Boulder climbers can often be seen challenging its rock formations. And the strains of celebrity singers can be heard in the air all summer long (between the roar of lions and tigers).

This is Swope Park, the second largest city park in the nation. From 1,334 acres donated by Colonel Thomas H. Swope in 1866, the park has grown to a massive 1,769 acres, and is now home to some of Kansas City’s best entertainment destinations.

First and foremost are the Kansas City Zoo and IMAX screen, popular family spots all year long. During the summer, crowds regularly fill the 7,000 seats at Starlight Outdoor Theatre to see great Broadway performances and special musical guests. Frisbee enthusiasts call the Frisbee Golf Course at Swope one of the best in the area, and the two mature public golf courses offer their share of challenges and scenic views. Walking trails criss-cross the park, and there are plenty of quiet corners to picnic or just read a book.

The park has its own place in the history books as well. Before Colonel Swope donated this large tract of land to the city, it was a battleground for the Civil War. When you visit, be sure to look for markers scattered all throughout the park describing the many historic
