Died at his home, Strawberry Hill Farm, near Hannibal December 23, 1896.
Representative First District of Missouri in the Congress of the United States 1879 - 1895

The impress of his public service may be found in the legislation of his country; that of his private life, in the hearts of all with whom it came in touch.
