Location. 34° 55.622′ N, 85° 16.374′ W. Marker is near Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, in Walker County. Memorial can be reached from Vittetoe Road west of Vittetoe-Chickamauga Road when traveling west. This historical marker is located in the northwest section of the Chickamauga National Military Park, near the Snodgrass Hill area of the driving tour, along the part of the battlefield known as Horseshoe Ridge. To view this historical marker drive to the parking area for Horseshoe Ridge (just beyond the Snodgrass House tour stop) and proceed westward on foot, along the southern crest of the ridge for a little more than 0.2 of a mile, to the lowlands just beyond the high ground on Hill #3, and just in the woods off of the park trail. According to the location information provided by the National Park Service the, “Monument is located in the Chickamauga Battlefield on Horseshoe Ridge, map site #153”. Touch for map. According to the description information provided by the National Park Service, the monument is, “5' square at base & 9' high, monument has rock-faced base, battered pedestal with bronze state seal, smooth raised lettered shaft framed by rock-faced slabs & carved crossed swords & laurel wreath in cap.”
The National Park Service also identifies C. H. Niehaus as being the sculptor of this monument and the Smith Granite Company of Westerly, Rhode Island as being the Architect of this monument.
