More about this marker. The marker is affixed to the side of the synagogue that was built out of cut white limestone, in the late fourth century A.D. However, this synagogue was built on the top of the foundation of an earlier synagogue that was built on this site in the late 1st century B.C. or early 1st century A.D., and built out of basalt stone.
Regarding The Synagogue of Jesus. A number of modern day scholars seem to be of the opinion that this synagogue (the earlier synagogue built of black basalt stone, NOT the later white limestone synagogue) was the original structure built by the Roman centurion from Luke 7: 3-5. This would also be the synagogue where Jesus taught "as one who had authority" from Mark 1: 21, where Jesus was confronted by a demoniac while teaching from Mark 1: 21-27, where Jesus healed the servant of the centurion from Luke 7: 3, and where Jesus gave his sermon on the bread of life from John 6: 35-59.
