Inscription. General-in-Chief of the United States Armies, Secretary of War, and 18th President of the United States. Grant's military successes were instrumental in the surrender of the Confederate States of America at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, bringing to an end the American Civil War and the enslavement of the African American people.
