Jamestown in James City County, Virginia — The American South (Mid-Atlantic)
California
Quadricentennial Plaza
— Jamestown Settlement —
Although explored primarily by Spain, Sir Francis Drake, sailing for England, also touched the California coast in 1579. After the establishment of Spanish missions, California became a territory of Mexico in 1825 following Mexican independence. American settlers quickly moved into the area and rebelled against the Mexican government in 1846. In an 1848 treaty, the United States annexed California. Settlers flocked there during the 1849 gold rush. Before the area could be organized as a territory, residents drew up a state constitution and elected a governor and legislature.
1542-Explored by navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo for Spain
1769-Permanently settled by Spanish missionaries
1850-Admitted to the Union as the 31st state
