Minty's Brigade, Crook's Division, Cavalry Corps.

Text from the back side of the monument:

On the morning of Sept. 18th, 1863, this regiment with its brigade, met the advance of Bushrod Johnson's Column on the east slope of Pea Vine Ridge, successfully delaying for ten hours the crossing at Reed's Bridge of a largely superior force of the enemy's infantry and artillery: thus materially contributing toward the defeat of the Confederate design to crush the left wing of the Union Army. Sept. 19th guarded the movement of trains to Chattanooga. Sept. 20th successfully engaged the enemy at Red House Bridge on the Ringgold Road. On the 21st and 22nd assisted in covering the movement of the army to Chattanooga.

round-topped slab with a bronze base relief panel of soldiers at a bridge. Unit information is inscribed above the relief panel."

I used the "Chickamauga Battlefield" map, that I purchased at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Visitor Center, to determine both the marker number for this monument and the monument's location in relation to the rest of the park's monuments, markers, and tablets. According to the map it provides the, "numerical listing of all monuments, markers, and tablets on the Chickamauga Battlefield (using the Chick-Chatt NMP Monument Numbering System).”

Regarding 4th Michigan Cavalry. It should be noted that this monument displays a bronze bas-relief artwork, that depicts the combat action that this regiment saw from this position.

When discussing Battlefield Monuments, the National Park Service offers this special insight: "Of special interest are bronze bas-relief plaques attached to many monuments. These depict battle scenes based on veterans' eyewitness accounts. Because there are no photographs of the fighting, these plaques are among the best visual records of the battles."
