Inscription. After Novato was incorporated in 1960, city officials found a ready-made City Hall in the former Presbyterian Church, built in 1896. The City purchased it in 1962; it was repainted dark red with white trim and in 1963, it reopened as Novato's City Hall. In 2005, City offices moved to 75 Rowland Way when the Hall and surrounding city-owned buildings were deemed structurally unsafe.
City Hall renovation took place in 2008-2009, which involved moving the building 12 feet north to a new foundation and reinforcing the structure and its then-fragile steeple, while preserving its historic nature. Two adjacent structures were removed to create a civic green.
In addition to hosting City Council and other civic meeting, the building serves as public venue for events such as receptions, banquets, and small performances. It is renowned as the iconic symbol of Novato.
