Commemorative Air Force Arizona Military Aviation Walk of Honor Proudly Recognizes MGen Barry Morris Goldwater, USAFR 1909 , 1993. Barry Goldwater served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Force as an instructor and Ferry Command pilot. In 1945 he founded and served in the Arizona Air National Guard until 1952 when he joined the Air Force reserves. In 1967, Goldwater retired from the Air Force, having flown 165 different types of aircraft accumulating more than 10,000 flying hours. Between 1953 and 1987 he served 5 terms as U.S. Senator from the State of Arizona and in 1964 he was a candidate for President of the United States. Throughout his life he supported military aviation and was the leading proponent for the creation of the Air Force Academy. February 2013 . This historical marker was erected in 2013.
