1. Major James Gibson Monument (East Side)
Son of Andrew Gibson and Sarah Hopkins,
was born August 10, 1776, at
Lancaster, Penna. Came to
Winchester, Virginia with
his parents in 1779.
Commissioned by
Governor Cabell in 1807
Captain of Hampshire County
Light Infantry Company
in the 77th Regiment of Virginia.
Commissioned by
President Madison in 1812
as Captain in the 12th Regiment
of United States Infantry.
After the war Captain Gibson
continued some years in service
in the Ordnance Department.
Later was Major in regiment of
Virginia Militia. Moved from
Romney to Frederick County
where he was one of the
Justices of County Court
and several terms in the
General Assembly of Virginia.
Moved again to Romney,
Hampshire County, from which
in 1845 he came to
Charles Town Jefferson County,
dying here on October 13, 1847.
In the discharge of the duties
of Neighbor, Friend, Husband
and Father he was highly
useful, honored and beloved.
