1. Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Marker

Inscription. A Rockcastle County post of the national GAR held meetings in this building for decades until the last of the local Union veterans became too old or died. It was a national fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union’s army, navy, and marines who served in the American Civil War. Founded 1866, dissolved 1956 after its last member died. The GAR became the first truly organized advocate of veterans’ benefits. Kentucky Department of GAR organized January 12, 1883. Composed of 155 posts. Rockcastle post named for town doctor Milton M. Frazier who commanded an infantry unit and died in battle. The national organization became so powerful that it was almost impossible for a candidate for U.S. president to be nominated by Republican Party without the blessing of the national organization.

When this building was vacated by Hiatt’s 5 & 10 after beginning of 21st Century, the upstairs hall was almost as it had been left after the last meeting had been adjourned. Membership hall here shared office and meeting space with the local Masonic Lodge, send floor of the Fish & Sons Men’s Apparel Store, later became Hiatt’s 5 & 10 for generations of customers, then became Amburgey Law Office.
