1. Monument Marker
Monument was little more than a siding and wye for the railroad, with little evidence remaining today of the railroad era.
Its name came from Monument Point, a prominent landform visible from here. Photos from 1869 show Lone Rock, which is below Monument Point, in a promotional photo of the "Jupiter" train engine run by Central Pacific. The Jupiter was carrying dignitaries to Promontory for the ceremonial driving of the Golden Spike, signifying the completion of the east and west railroads.
A rail spur off the tracks led to the Desert Salt Works. The salt plant provided employment for some of the 25 or so inhabitants of the settlement. Remains of the Salt Works can be seen today in the stone foundation of four rooms and remnants of lumber.
Monument was never very populated. After the closing of the salt plant, it served as a freight siding for regional ranchers.

More about this marker. The Transcontinental Railroad Back Country Byway is a 90 mile dirt/gravel track on top of or beside the old Central Pacific Rail Road grade between Old Lucin and Promontory Summit. Other than markers designating old station and sidings there are few, if any, road signs identifying any of the side roads. Any other road names or numbers use on this marker page have been taken Google Maps which identifies the road variously as Golden Spike Loop Road, Old Railroad Grade Road, Salt Wells Road, etc.
Neither are there any mileage posts, though one could do the arithmetic using the "Mile ... from San Francisco" on the markers to determine distances.
