1. Het Arsenaal / The Arsenal Marker

Inscription. In tegenstelling tot wat de naam doet vermoeden, is dit gebouw uit 1610 niet als wapendepot gebouwd, maar als 'stadsturfhuis'. Turf werd gebruikt als brandstof. Het gebouw diende van 1665 tot 1808 als opslag voor graan, boter en turf voor de armen. In de negentiende eeuw is het gebouw gebruikt als wapenarsenaal. Aan de Waterloopleinkant is sinds 1946 de Academie van Bouwkunst gehuisvest. Sinds 1987 zijn aan deze kant de kantoren van het joods Historisch Museum gevestigd.

Contrary to what the name may suggest, the Arsenal was originally built in 1610 to store turf for the town. Turf was used to heat houses. Grain, butter and turf for the poor were stored here from 1665 to 1808. In the nineteenth century, this building was used as a weapons arsenal. On the Waterlooplein side, the Academy of Architecture has been housed here since 1946. on this side of the building, the Offices of the Jewish Historical Museum have been housed here since 1987.
