In Greek mythology the Amazons were a nation of female warriors. The fearless Amazon to your immediate left confronts a vicious panther that has sunk its teeth into her terrified horse’s neck. The original sculptures for this and The Lion Fighter (opposite side of steps) are located in front of the National Museum in Berlin. The Fairmount Park Art Association had a bronze cast of The Lion Fighter made in 1892. They made a bronze cast of the Amazon in 1929, and then placed the two works here as the Parkway and the Art Museum were completed, mirroring the German museum placement.

Both artists show the influence of their teacher, German sculptor Christian Rauch.
