1. Walter Adams Field Marker

Inscription. Walter Adams (1922-1998), master teacher and one of the foremost antitrust economists of his generation, served from April 1, 1969, until January 1, 1970, as 13th President of Michigan State University. Prolific author and frequent witness before Congressional Committees, Adams joined the faculty in 1947, retiring in 1993 as Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Economics. Adams served in World War II with the 83rd Infantry and 11th Armored Divisions, landing in Normandy, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, and helping to liberate three concentration camps. He received the Bronze Star for heroic conduct. As President, he guided the University at the height of the student protests associated with the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. Adams was a loyal fan of Spartan sports and an honorary member of the Spartan Marching Band. On autumn Saturdays, he led the band from this field to Spartan Stadium. May those who visit Adams Field forever cherish the memory of a scholar who embodied the values and traditions of Michigan State University with dignity, humor, and love.
