Inscription. This property, which consists of parts of two adjacent structures built in the 1880s, was the location of many Baker City businesses over the years. One of the first was Basche-Sage Hardware Co., which was to grow into one of the Northwest’s largest independent hardware wholesalers. Another hardware store operated at the same address almost a century later. In between, the property housed the Orpheum Theater. The Orpheum was one of four theaters on Main Street in the early 1900s.
While the theater was in business, the original facades of the adjoining buildings were covered by a plaster front. The Orpheum closed after it was damaged by a fire.
