Inscription.  A committee of civic-minded Baker City residents began meeting in 1911 to organize a fund-raising campaign to build a Young Men’s Christian Association building. The committee soon had secured pledges of more than $30,000.
Plans for the three-story brick structure included meeting rooms, lodging rooms, a gymnasium on the west side of the building and a small swimming pool in the basement.
The cornerstone of the building, containing a strong box with mementos, was consecrated with corn, oil and wine Oct. 24, 1912, and the building was formally dedicated in March of the following year.
