Shelburne in Chittenden County, Vermont — The American Northeast (New England)
Dorset House
Ca. 1832 East Dorset, Vermont
| | Original Owner: Welcome Allen Moved to Museum: 1953 | |
This classic example of Greek Revival architecture originally served as a two-family house for the children of Welcome Allen. The Allens, who owned an iron foundry, built their home in the latest fashion, utilizing stoves for heat rather than open-hearth fireplaces. The building houses the Museum's extensive working and decorative wildfowl decoy collections and miniature bird carvings. The second floor is devoted to open storage.
The Dorset House reopens on September 1, 2017 after extensive renovation and reinterpretation.
Erected by the Shelburne Museum.
