Louise grew up in North Carolina and came from a well-to-do family. At age 30, unmarried and considered a spinster, she traveled west to join her brothers who worked at Bayhorse. There, Louise met and married a hansom freighter, Joe Short, and moved to Custer. The marriage did not last long and soon Miss Lou was on her own, living in the tiny, one-room stone house on the hill.
