1. Stone House Marker

Inscription. At the top of this trail are the remains of a stone house, the only one within the proper boundaries of Custer. Many single miners live in the house, but one of the most memorable residents was Louise Terloar Short.
Louise grew up in North Carolina and came from a well-to-do family. At age 30, unmarried and considered a spinster, she traveled west to join her brothers who worked at Bayhorse. There, Louise met and married a hansom freighter, Joe Short, and moved to Custer. The marriage did not last long and soon Miss Lou was on her own, living in the tiny, one-room stone house on the hill.
