1. Stone House Marker
Photo captions: (upper left) Stone House on hill behind Pfeiffer House; Stone House in 1956. the trail up to remnants of the Stone House is very steep and rocky. Please use caution if you chose to hike the trail.; (bottom right) Town of Custer with the location circled in red.
Inscription. At the top of this trail are the remains of a stone house, the only one within the proper boundaries of Custer. Many single miners live in the house, but one of the most memorable residents was Louise Terloar Short.
Louise grew up in North Carolina and came from a well-to-do family. At age 30, unmarried and considered a spinster, she traveled west to join her brothers who worked at Bayhorse. There, Louise met and married a hansom freighter, Joe Short, and moved to Custer. The marriage did not last long and soon Miss Lou was on her own, living in the tiny, one-room stone house on the hill.

Erected by U.S. Forest Service and Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.
