Myrtle Beach in Horry County, South Carolina — The American South (South Atlantic)
Captain Stephen Richard Phillis
He and his unit were deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1990 in support of that operation. While on a combat mission in northwestern Kuwait, his wingman was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft ﬁre. Captain Phillis immediately organized a search and rescue mission for his wingman. While doing so, he was hit by enemy ﬁre and was killed in the ensuing crash of his A-10.
Captain Phillis is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in his hometown of Rock Island.
