George Dewey, Admiral of the Navy, U.S.N.
1837-1917
Born in Montpelier, Vermont, George Dewey graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1858. Following service in the Civil War, he held several high-ranking administrative positions in the navy. Promoted to Commodore, in 1898 he took command of the Asiatic Squadron.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt ordered Dewey to take offensive action in the Philippines in the event of war with Spain. Several days after the declaration of war, on 1 May 1898, he decisively defeated the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay.

Promoted to Admiral of the Navy, the highest rank existing, he returned home to a hero’s welcome. At his death, his body lay in state under the capitol dome in Washington, DC.
