Baton Rouge in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana — The American South (West South Central)
Old State Capitol
Downtown Baton Rouge
Louisiana's Old State Capitol was built in 1850 and housed the State Legislature and Senate until 1932. The castellated gothic statehouse has withstood war, fire, abandonment, as well as political intrigue. The National Historic Landmark has witnessed many significant events in Louisiana's history. Events that occurred here include "impassioned debates" over the Louisiana Lottery, the drafting of the Constitution of 1921, and the impeachment of Huey P. "Kingfish" Long by the Legislature in 1929.
This marvel now houses the Center for Political and Governmental History as well as the Museum Gift Shop, a selection of one-of-a-kind merchandise including works from local artists. Although the building underwent a major renovation in 1990, Louisiana's Old State Capitol continues to serve the purpose for which it was constructed - bringing people and government together.
Erected by Downtown Development District.
