The current official Mexican government version of the incident is that the Cardinal was confused by hitmen for narcotrafficker "El Chapo" Gúzman, their intended target. The Mexican Catholic Church has never agreed with this position and argues that the Cardinal may have been the intended target of the shooting. The case continues to be officially open.
