1. On Guard Marker
The sentry is part of a military guard stationed here to provide protection for the Crown Jewels. The military guard comes from an operational unit of the Armed Forces that is currently employed on ceremonial duties.
On duty today The Coldstream Guards
On 14 February 1661, the Coldstream Guards paraded a few hundred metres away on nearby Tower Hill and 'Ground Arms' as a Regiment in the pay of Parliament, then ‘Took up Arms’ in the name of the King.
They had been raised in 1650 part of Oliver Cromwell's 'New Model Army’. In January 1660, they marched from Coldstream on the Scottish border, to London to support the restoration of King Charles II, an act which gave the Regiment the name it holds today.
In recent years, Coldstreamers on operations in Northern Ireland, The Balkan, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. The 1st Battalion is currently based in either Windsor or Aldershot.
