1. Broadwell Building Marker

Inscription. Circa 1902 Local cotton farmer, John Broadwell built this structure with brick manufactured nearby. John's half-brother, Newport H. Broadwell, Jr., operated the original dry goods store. Later the building served many uses: lodging for travelers, a hall for square dancing and community meetings, a millinery, and a men's lodge. Newport's second wife, Nannie Stephens Broadwell, directed local plays on the second floor. The building was saved from demolition when Ben and Pat Statham purchased it in 1965. They opened Crabapple Penthouse Antiques upstairs, and started the popular Crabapple Antiques Fair two years later.
