1. Neyland Stadium Marker
Inscription. Neyland Stadium, one of the largest stadiums in North America, is named for General Robert Neyland (1892-1962). This football coach who, in his 21 seasons at U.T., led the Vols through nine undefeated seasons and brought the Vols a National Championship in 1951. Coach Neyland was known both for his rigorous practice sessions, most of which took place on a dirt field here beside the river and his football theories or "maxims", some of which are listed below.

There are more ways to score on defense than on offense
A quitter never wins and a winner never quits
Never stop till the referee's whistle blows
One good blocker is worth three ball-carrying stars
A team that won't be beat can't be beat
The team that makes the fewest mistakes wins
Go out to fight and keep it up all afternoon
Football is a battle
Let none escape
Eleven men in every play
