The Village of Milford Center
Est. 1816
Inscription.
In 1799, a man named George Reed first came to this spot along the Darby Creek. He settled and erected a grist mill with a mill race nearly a half mile long in 1810 to 1812. In those days, man and animals had to ford the creek, so the crossing became known as the Mill- Ford at the George Reed Mill. Mr.Reed laid out the town in 1814 and was joined by other settlers in the area establishing the Village of Milford in 1816. In the 1820s the name of the town changed to
Milford Center for a more dignified status as the Village became the county seat.
The map above shows the Village in 1870 with two railroad lines, ½ mile mill race, and the size of the town.
