Inscription. This house was built in 1846 by George Walden soon after the town of Centre was laid out. The house was occupied by Judge Wm. Lafayette Whitlock who was a lawyer, delegate to the 1861 Secession Convention and judge of the 12th judicial district. Then it was purchased by Judge Samuel Marshall, who owned Round Mountain Iron Works during the Civil War. After that, the house was owned by Washington Stiff, editor of the Cherokee Advertiser newspaper. J.D. Jordan Jr., owner of Jeff Jordan & Co., now the location of the Cherokee County Museum, purchased the house in 1928 from the Stiff family.
