On July 1, 2002, Murray was appointed to the highest level of enlisted leadership in the USAF - the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, Headquarters, USAF, Washington, D.C. In this position, he provided direction for the enlisted corps, and represented their interests to the American public and to those in all levels of government. He served as the Personal Adviser to the Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Air Force on all issues regarding the readiness, welfare, morale, and proper utilization and
Chief Murray holds numerous awards and decorations including the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster and Air Force Achievement Medal. In 1992, while at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, he was presented the Air Force Gen Lew Allen Trophy in recognition of outstanding performance in aircraft sortie generation during 1991.
