A Brief History
of Britain's
Oldest Brewer
Records show that Faversham was first associated with brewing as early as 1147, when King Stephen founded the town's abbey which contained a brewhouse that produced ale for the monks.
Shepherd Neame Brewery was established in 1698 by Captain Richard Marsh. In 1732, Samuel Shepherd took over the running of the brewery, introducing a new era of growth, which included the acquisition of 21 pubs, five of which remain with the brewery to the present.
In 1864 Percy Beale Neame, a 28 year-old hop farmer joined the firm as a partner and Shepherd Neame & Company was born.
To the present day, a fifth generation of the Neame family is at the helm.
