Regarding Bartolomé Gutiérrez. In 1587 Toyotomi Hideyoshi banned Catholicism after reuniting Japan. Over the next years the penalties for Catholics in Japan were increased, up to death for the clergy and some converts. In Nagasaki, Japan in 1632, Bartolomé Gutiérrez, of the Order of Hermits of St. Augustine, and five companions, were all immersed in the boiling sulfurous waters of a hot spring and then thrown into a fire. They were beatified by Pope Pius IX on July 7, 1867. Adapted from catholic.org
