The Porcupine
The Porcupine has occupied the same location on Charing Cross Road since 1725 when the pub's address was 1 Castle Street. The Porcupine soon established itself as a favourite haunt of the local freemasons and in 1807 it became the meeting place for the Lodge of Confidence and remained so until 1829. The building of Charing Cross Road was started in 1877, and was essentially a widening of Crown Street and Castle Street. Works were completed in the late 1880s. Charing Cross gets its name from a memorial placed here by King Edward 1 in honour of his wife "Eleanor of Castle" The hamlet of "Charing” was one of 12 places where Eleanor's coffin rested overnight during the funeral procession from Lincolnshire to her final resting place in Westminster.
