Itta Bena in Leflore County, Mississippi — The American South (East South Central)
In Memory of the Brave Marines and Navy Corpsman
Side A
On July 10, 2017, at 2141 Zulu (3:41 PM local), a U.S. Marine Corps KC-130T flying at 20,000 ft. suffered a catastrophic inflight breakup. The aircraft disappeared from radar at the Memphis ARTCC, and an immediate query of nearby airports failed to locate it. Witnesses on the ground and local ag pilots reported an aircraft accident about seven miles west of this site and the connection was soon made. First responders were on scene quickly, but the nature of the event made it non-survivable. For the next several weeks, an emergency operations center was established on this site. Crews from many local, state and federal agencies worked tirelessly alongside the Marines to recover the remains and all associated wreckage.
