Nyborg Stjerneskanse

Nyborg's Star Redoubt

The redoubt was erected in 1658-59 during the second so-called Karl X. Gustav War. A Swedish army had occupied Nyborg and stationed the main camp east of the city, on the natural isthmus "Østerø". At that time, the area consisted of large wetlands with few access points to the isthmus and therefore provided an effective protection for the Swedish war camp. The Star Redoubt was in fact built by the Swedes to secure the northern access point to the isthmus.
Eventually, the old redoubt fell into decay - but in connection with the outbreak of the war between Denmark and England in 1807, it was decided by Crown Prince Frederick (VI of Denmark) to renovate the redoubt. It was converted into a rectangular redoubt, from which two star points are preserved. In 1899 the War Department sold the redoubt to a local pharmacist whom remodeled the old gun powder house into the current castle-like building. The current owner decided in 2014, on his own initiative and expenses, to renovate and refurbish the redoubt in cooperation with The Danish Agency for Culture, Nyborg Municipality and The Museum of Eastern Funen.
The area is not open to the public.
