The Bofors was a British version of a Swedish Gun. It came into mass production in Britain in 1939 and became the mainstay of the British Light Anti Aircraft Defence during the Second World War. Emplaced in simple sandbagged pits, it protected strategic targets such as factories and dockyards, including Hartlepool.
The gun was so successful that it was used by several other countries, including Germany. It was hand fed with four round clips and its speed was limited only by the efficiency of the team operating it.
The Bofors remained in use by the British Army until 1977, however, a number are still in use around the world. The Bofors factory still offers an upgrade and refurbishment service to this day.
