The Chapel
— Warkworth Castle —
This private chapel was once the most ornate room in the keep. It had a gallery above, warmed by a fireplace, for the Earl and his family. This lower level was used by servants.
In the illustration the chaplain is saying daily prayers before the household. The beautiful stained glass windows are as high as the Great Hall and naturalistic painting decorates the walls. The altar stands two steps up on a floor of glazed tiles, a rare embellishment in the north of England.
The doorway to the right of the altar leads to the sacristy where the chaplain would have robed and kept the sacred vessels. His sedilia (seat) and piscina (wash-basin) are in the wall to the left of it.
