Excerpt from NRHP Statement of Significance:

Built in 1880-82 for local shipbuilder and ship captain Simon G. Johnston, the substantial frame residence is a fine example of an Italianate style residence. Significant for the wealth and variety of original detail that remains intact on both the exterior and the interior, it well represents an important aspect of architectural taste in the period following the Civil War.

The house was built for Captain Simon G. Johnston, owner of one of the largest shipyards in Clayton, and his wife Emmeline. Johnston, a successful captain and locally distinguished citizen, owned much of the land in the village of Clayton, including almost the entire block on which the home is situated. Captain Johnston and Emmeline raised six children in the home, which remained in the Johnston family until 1962 when a grandson, Stanely J. Hungerford, sold it to Jacquelyne Felt Vroman. Robert W. and Betsy H. Kemp purchased the property in
1975 for their residence and real estate business.
