Inscription. For much of its history, the Washington Navy Yard was the life of the party, holding local community and neighborhood events such as WWI and WWII Navy Day diving demonstrations. Divers wearing cumbersome 190-pound deep-sea diving suits recovered even the smallest objects from the riverbed. While the number of community events on the Yard has declined in recent years due to security concerns, the National Museum of the U.S. Navy, which is located on the Yard, is open to the community and frequently hosts speakers and events.
