The Foundations, Piers, Abutments and the Whols of the Masonry of the Bridge were constructed by the Tyne Commissioners’ Engineering Staff, and the Iron Superstructure and Machinery by Sir W.G. Armstrong and Co. John F. Ure Chief Engineer Philip J. Messent – Acting Engineer. Note , The Bridge is on the site previously occupied by the Stone Bridge erected in 1778 on which the Boundary Stone between Newcastle and Gateshead was situated at a point 316 Feet South of this Tablet
