1. City Walls, 15th cent. Marker

Building of medieval City Walls started after the decision of the Venetian authorities in 1278. Still, we cannot state with certainty that some kind of walls had not already been there. However, the building went on very slowly, which can be concluded from the Venetian decision from 1326-1327 by which the people of Hvar were given money for building the walls. City walls in their present shape were finished for the most part only in the mid-15th cent. after the Venetian rule was established again. In the 16th cent. walls had already been neglected. They lost their defensive function when the city spread out of the walls. City Walls have four gates.
