Županijska Palača
Varaždin County Palace
Works on the building were carried out by Jakob Erber, a famous Varaždin mason. After the disastrous fire of 1776, which almost completely destroyed Varaždin, the Palace late-Baroque facade was replaced by a new triangular one in Classicist style. In the period from 1772 to 1924, twenty-five prefects had their seat in the Palace. Until 1776, Varaždin was the capital of Croatia and the seat of Ban. The Croatian Royal Council of Lieutenancy - the first Croatian government - was also founded in Varaždin.
In 1925, when counties were abolished, central judiciary and administration offices were situated in the Palace until 1945. Later until 2006, the Palace housed political and civil society organizations, associations and companies.
The Varaždin Country Palace was renovated in 2006, following the original designs. The renovation of the Palace was funded through public-private partnership (PPF), a model that was used in Croatia for the very first time.
Varaždin County is the oldest Croatian county. To mark its 825 anniversary, the Varaždin County Palace was open to public.
