The Norman Counter-attack
— Battle of Hastings, 1066 —
Encouraged by Duke William, the Normans turn and attack the English who have pursued them down the hill. Those who have been separated from the safety of the shield wall are surrounded and annihilated.
According to a close follower of William, it was the duke himself, with his sword flashing in the sunlight, who led the counter attack.
