Inscription. A brief, self-guiding tour will show you the remains of a typical Frederick County limestone quarry and battery of lime kilns. The map to the right identifies the location of nine interpretive signs which explain the sites features.

The Fountain Rock quarry and lime kilns operated between about 1872 and 1955, producing two major products, powdered burnt lime for agricultural use and crushed stone for road surfacing. Most of the original structures and equipment are gone but remnants of both the crushed stone and powdered lime operations have survived, including six of the eight original kilns. These kilns are also referred to as continuous burning pot kilns.

For your safety and for the protection of the site, please stay on walkways. Do not go into or climb onto the structures.
