William W. Hawes House. 363 York Ave.. The major new industry begun in Towanda in the 1880’s was James H. Hawes’ Toy Factory, located just north of the Historic District in a neighborhood still called Toytown. The Hawes firm became one of the Country’s largest. About 1894, James’ son and successor William built this Queen Anne home. It features scalloped shingles; recessed porch on the third story; wrap-around porch with turned columns; corbeled brick chimney; three full story gabled bays; bull’s eye windows; and an octagonal tower with a tent roof.
