Winans-Crippen House- 1871. . On this site stood the Winans-Crippen House. Prominent local architect J. D. Stevens, who also designed the. United States Hotel and the Grand Central Hotel on Broadway, designed the freestanding wood-framed townhouse in the Second Empire style in 1871 for David Winans, a local merchant. It was subsequently owned by George Crippen, owner of a local dry goods business and later a women's dress manufacturer, Crippen and Reid. The building was a "contributing building” of the Franklin Square/West Side Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was lost in November 2013.
