1. The House of Crane Marker
Inscription. Edward Beck built this Italianate-style commercial building at 124 South Meridian Street in 1866-67 to house a variety of wholesalers offering liquor, hats, clothes, coffee, hardware, and other merchandise. The House of Crane, a cigar wholesaler, first occupied the south half of the building in 1911 and remodeled the storefront and interior in 1916 when the firm expanded to occupy the entire building. The prism glass transoms date from the remodeling and allow sunlight to penetrate the interior. Cigars were wholesaled here for nearly 70 years. The building was demolished in 1990, but its facade was retained on the site and integrated into Circle Centre.
