Built by the General American Transportation Corporation, number 96500 is the world's largest tank car. Used for experimental purposes, transporting anhydrous ammonia and lp gas, this "whale belly" unit carried 60,200 gallons, weighs 220 tons fully loaded, and is 96' 7 5/8" long. The Association of American Railroads has since adopted a maximum length not to exceed 89'. Donated in 1971 by the General American Transportation Corporation.
