Inscription. The Cardinals beat Christy Mathewson 3-1, after 24 straight losses to Mathewson. In a game marked by Cardinals Manager Roger Bresnahan's return to New York, where he had starred from 1902-08.

and sometimes at the same time, a manager. Bresnahan's best years were with the New York Giants, where he was a World Champion in 1905. He is widely credited for popularizing shin guards (worn by catchers) and for developing the modern batting helmet. This was after Bresnahan was hit by a pitch and was hospitalized for ten days.
