1. The Founding of Elizabethtown Marker

Inscription. Barnabas and Elizabeth Hughes, founding family of Elizabethtown, from County Donegal, Ireland, purchased the Bear Tavern trading post along the Conoy Creek from Lazarus Lowrey in 1753. Barnabas laid out the town, one of the earliest communities settled in Lancaster County, and named it Elizabeth in honor of his wife.
