Farley’s career truly came to life in 1928, when he became secretary of the New York State Democratic Committee and organized Franklin Roosevelt’s successful gubernatorial campaign. He ran Roosevelt’s reelection campaign in 1930. Convinced that Roosevelt could win the party’s presidential nomination in 1932, Farley travelled the country in his behalf. At the convention, he arranged the deal whereby John N. Garner of Texas received the vice-presidential nomination in return for support of Roosevelt by the Texas and California delegations.
